"Unfried" Beans

Canned refried beans are frequently loaded with unhealthy fats and are high in sodium. I prefer to make my own. It is so quick and easy to make that you will never buy them pre-prepared again!

Ingredients:

1 can organic pinto beans (15oz)

Ground Cumin

Granulated Garlic

Ground Cayenne

Kosher salt

Pepper

Directions:

  1. In a small saucepan, heat entire contents of can of beans (beans and their liquid) over medium high heat.

  2. Add all spices and mix to combine. Heat beans and spices until simmering.

  3. Using a stick blender, blend entire mixture till smooth. When using a stick blender, be sure to keep the head of the blender beneath the surface of the beans so that they do not splatter. I like to tilt the pan while I am blending to make sure that it doesn’t splatter.

  4. Once blended, taste your beans and adjust seasoning to your liking. Lower heat to low. Depending on how much liquid was in your beans, you may need to continue to cook over low heat for up to 10 minutes until the proper consistency. Stir frequently so that they do not burn to bottom of the pan. The beans will thicken further as they cool so let sit for about 5 minutes before serving
